In Psychopathia Sexualis (1886), a compendium of sexual instance records and sex-crimes, Krafft-Ebing failed to link sadism and masochism, understanding them as stemming from various sexual and logics that are erotic. However in Three documents on intimate Theory (1905), Freud observed that sadism and masochism in many cases are based in the individual that is same and, consequently, combined the terms. He understood sadism as a distortion regarding the aggressive element of the male sexual instinct, and masochism as a kind of sadism directed from the self—and a graver ‘aberration’ than simple sadism.
